Welsh Language and Culture

Menter Iaith Môn was established in 1997 in order to “promote and facilitate the Welsh language on the island”

It offers support to communities on the island to increase and develop their use of the Welsh language. Advice and assistance is available to individuals, organisations and businesses, and activities are also arranged to raise the profile of the Welsh language.

Ynys Môn one of the strongholds of the Welsh language with over 60% of the population bilingual, which increases to 73% among children and young people. The language is alive in the home, in the workplace, in schools and in the community.

We provide a one stop shop for the Welsh language and can provide advice on everything from learning Welsh as a second language and bilingual education, translating a poster and arranging a Welsh language event. We also arrange many activities including:

  • social and leisure opportunities for children and young people to use their Welsh
  • social and leisure opportunities for parents and families to encourage and promote use of their Welsh
  • opportunities for Welsh learners to use their Welsh outside the classroom
  • working in partnership with local organisations to offer social activities

The Menter Iaith is mainly funded through the Welsh Language Board and we work with our partners, namely TWF, Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin, the Young Farmers, Yr Urdd and the Welsh for Adults Centre.
