In 2019 Beaumaris was awarded plastic free status from a leading marine charity. It was the first town on Anglesey to achieve this.

But this is only part of the story and is the culmination of much hard work by several local residents and businesses as well as LEADER support through Arloesi Môn.

The Plastic Free Beaumaris campaign was established by a group of locals who were keen to reduce single-use plastic amongst the town’s businesses and residents.

With around 7.7 billion plastic bottles used every day and an increased awareness of the harm that plastics can cause to wildlife, the volunteers were determined to take action. With Anglesey being the first county in Wales to receive ‘plastic-free community status’ it was also hoped the initiative could reinforce this as well as send a clear message to people about the need to re-use and refill.

Looking back at the work, Gwen Evans Jones, chair of the local action group, said: “We are all so much more aware now of the harm that plastic can cause. We wanted to make a difference here, and make the world a better place for future generations. We hope that our work in the town will inspire other communities across the island to take up the challenge and join us.”

Menter Môn through Arloesi Môn was pleased to be part of this project and its aim of achieving the non-plastic status. As an organisation and with the support of our partners we aim to tackle the challenges facing communities on the island – which is exactly what this Beaumaris scheme was doing.
