North Wales tidal energy scheme, Morlais was successful at the recent Careers Wales, Valued Partners Awards held at The Senedd, Cardiff this week. The scheme, managed by social enterprise, Menter Môn, won the Newcomer category.
Success at these awards highlight Morlais’ dedication to creating opportunities for workforce development and educating young people about the important role of tidal energy in tackling climate change.
The Careers Wales Awards celebrate exceptional contributions to career development innovation across Wales. The Best Newcomer award recognises organisations that have made a significant impact in a short time
On receiving the award, Fiona Parry, Skills and Training Project Officer, expressed her gratitude,
“I joined Morlais just over a year ago, and it’s incredibly rewarding to not only be nominated but to win this award. Collaborating with Careers Wales to engage with young people is a crucial aspect of my role. Visiting schools to talk about Morlais and inspiring students to consider their futures has been a privilege.”
She added “We are thrilled to receive this recognition. At Morlais, we have always been about promoting the project locally here on Ynys Môn (Anglesey) and across the region, encouraging young people to consider careers in this important sector. I’d like to thank Careers Wales, especially John Edwards, for organising events that have facilitated these meaningful conversations.”
As one of the world’s largest consented tidal stream energy projects, Morlais will use the power of the tides off the coast of Ynys Môn to generate clean electricity. The first turbines are scheduled to be deployed in 2026.
Morlais’ development is supported by funding from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, alongside contributions from the Isle of Anglesey County Council, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), and the North Wales Growth Deal.
