Following a weekend of storm disruption, the spotlight was on young people from Ynys Môn as they gathered to discuss the growing impact of climate change on their community at a special conference in Llangefni this week.
Pupils from two of the island’s secondary schools came together to share their concerns and present ideas for tackling the challenges posed by extreme weather events and environmental changes, giving them a platform to shape the future of their local area.
Organised by Menter Môn as part of the Welsh Government Climate Conversation, the conference recognised the need for urgent action and the key role of the next generation in meeting environmental challenges. Welsh TV presenter Ameer Davies-Rana facilitated the event with experts including Bangor University lecturer, Dr Eifiona Lane and Menter Môn officials also contributing to the discussion with Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni and Ysgol David Hughes.
Dafydd Gruffydd is the Managing Director of Menter Môn, he said: “It is vital that the voices of young people are heard on important topics like climate change. This conference was an opportunity to share ideas, learn from the experts, and create a vision for a more sustainable future.
“As a company, much of our work focuses on sustainability and the environment. We work with communities to maintain nature reserves and conserve the habitats of rare species, as well as develop innovative renewable energy projects, such as tidal energy scheme, Morlais, and the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub which will aim to produce carbon-free fuel.
“The island has unique natural qualities, but these are increasingly coming under threat from several factors, including climate change. By hosting events like this and continuing to support and encourage action, we hope to play a small part in the solution and make a positive impact for the future.”
The Welsh Government’s Climate Conversation aims to encourage local discussions about the impact of climate change and discover new ways to adapt to challenges. As part of his, the Llangefni event aimed to contribute young local voices to the wider discussion that will ultimately inform how the Welsh Government ensures its actions on climate consider the needs of communities across Wales.
